Interguru's Pegasus to Netscape Address Conversion
This page will convert Pegasus address and distribution lists to the equivalent Netscape address book file.
Instructions
Note: Read all instructions before doing anything.
Pegausus allows multiple address books and multiple distribution lists. Netscape has only one address book which may contain multiple distribution lists.
- Decide which address books you want to export.
- Open Pegasus and export these files as text to some convienent temporary place on your hard disk. Name them addr1.txt, addr2.txt, etc.
If you have a later version of Pegasus, which gives you a choice of export
formats, choose Tagged Text File. Be sure to select all the addresses
before you export. (Windows cntrl-a, Mac command-a)
- To export thse address books to a text file
- Open Pegasus
- Addresses Menu: Address Books
- Open an address book
- Select (highlight) all the addresses in the book
- Addressbook Menu: Export to tagged text file
- Decide which disrtribution lists you want to export. IMPORTANT Make sure that you have used these lists (i.e. mailed from them) at least once. Pegasus does not make a validity check for circular references when you create/modify the list, only when you use it.
- Open Pegasus and export these distribution lists as text to the same temporary place on your hard disk. Name them list1.txt, list2.txt, ...
- For each distribution list you need to note its filename which is to the right of the list name in the Distibution List window. Write down the names of these files (without the .pml extension) which correspond to file1,file2, ....
- Indicate below the number of address books and distribution lists you intend to transalte
Next press the Continue button.
Netscape 1-3
This output is your Netscape address book.
Windows users save it in your Netscape folder's Navigator folder
as "address.htm". If you do not have a Netscape folder, use the Find File function of Windows Explorer to find the file
"netscape.exe". Put "address.htm" into the same folder
as "netscape.exe". Before saving it, you may want to re-name the existing file
to save it as a safety measure.
Mac users save it as "AddressBook.html" in System Folder:Preferences:Netscape : Before saving it, you may want to re-name the existing file to save it as a safety measure.
You must quit Netscape and re-start it to have the new address list take effect.
Netscape 4 and beyond
Save the file as "address.htm" in some convenient
temporary place. Use the Communicator menu to go to the Address Book.
Then use the file menu, Import addresses, import the file.
An Explanation of Circular References
When a distribution list directly or indirectly contains itself, this is a circular reference. Pegasus only checks for these when the list is used to send a message. This translation script does not check for these. If you include such a reference, Netscape will act unpredictably when it uses the output address list. (If anyone wants to try it, tell me what happened.)
Technical Notes
To avoid overburdening the server, we have limited the total of all files to 1200 lines and 120kb
